New 'SuperVooc' technology will allow you to fully charge your phone in just nine minutes, and could be available in your devices by the summer.
This will also help companies design smaller, thinner phones after devices used to come in bulky sizes to fit giant batteries.
The new technology, which allows fast charging without causing damage to batteries, was demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week.
It comes from Chinese phone maker Oppo, which is the fourth largest globally and growing rapidly in the UK alongside sub-brands OnePlus, Realme and Vivo.
Stuart Miles, founder of technology website Pocket-Lint.co.uk, told MailOnline:
“Battery life is really important to many users, but improvements in efficiency are slower than most of us would like.”
So companies say if you can't make it last longer, let's make the shipping faster.
The new technology allows fast charging without causing damage to the batteries.
“Oppo’s new technology takes just nine minutes – less than you need to shower and brush your teeth in the morning – to fully charge.”
Miles believes the new technology will help make batteries smaller, allowing for thinner and lighter phones.
He said the iPhone has become more and more heavy over the years due to the increasing size of its battery.
He explained, “Ultra-fast charging like this means smaller batteries, so if you can charge it within minutes, you won’t need a giant battery.”
“Of course, many people want a big screen, so phones need to be large to accommodate that – but they don't need to be thick and heavy.”
The 150W version will charge the phone in 15 minutes.
Most phones, including iPhones and Samsungs, can only handle 10 to 30 watts
Because too much power can cause batteries to overheat and damage devices.
Samsung was forced to recall millions of phones in 2016 because the batteries overheated – some even caught fire.
Oppo's new technology has been in development since 2014.
Neil Munger, Product Manager at Oppo UK, said:
“It's not just about speed – it's also about doing it in a safe way for our customers.”
For example, if you just try to put more power into a battery without the relevant safeguards,
This may cause damage to the battery in the long term, causing it to deteriorate faster over time.
He adds that the new versions of SuperVooc have 13 temperature sensors installed in the phone to monitor the charging status in real time, which reduces the chances of overheating.
“If someone keeps a phone for two or three years, they should know that a good battery will retain 80 percent of its capacity after 800 charges, while our new battery we do that after 1,600 charges.
